Trials in the hospital can bring us to our knees. We yearn for deliverance from our pain. We yearn for loved ones to stay, when death calls them away. We yearn, as healthcare providers, to usher those in our care toward wellness, and disdain in the insufficiency of our own hands when we can’t.

Such ordeals can throw into question the goodness of God, whose love seems so palpable and real while we praise him in church, but elusive when a cardiac monitor sings out our heartbeat. And yet, the truths of the Bible persist, even in the corridors of the hospital. His steadfast love and faithfulness endure forever. His mercy is without bounds. By grace, out of love for us, he has saved us in Christ.

My second book, Glimmers of Grace: A Doctor’s Reflections on Faith, Suffering, and the Goodness of God, navigates these murky waters, and aims to point us to Christ when death and illness thrust doubts upon us. The book is my attempt to steward the insights about faith and illness that God entrusted to me during my years in medicine, with an emphasis on turning to Scripture for reassurance of God’s love when he seems most remote.
